Soulard Coffee Garden and Cafe | Soulard, St. Louis, MO

Soulard Coffee Garden is a cozy spot located in the Historic Soulard Neighborhood near Downtown St. Louis. At first glance, you would never expect this hole in the wall restaurant to have great gluten free options but stop in and you’ll be surprised. Menu items are marked with a “G” if they are gluten free and the home fries are baked not fried. And let’s not forget the mimosa pitches and other boozy breakfast delights. My go-to’s are the Hash & Eggs (pictured here) and the Slinger. Always get the home fries, you will regret it if you don’t. Check them out here and hmu next time you’re in the neighborhood and looking for a brunch date 😉

Austin, TX

Hey y’all, I went to Texas and actually had (mostly) amazing gluten free food so I wanted to share my findings! VIA 313 Pizza | 1111 E 6th St, Austin, TX This place was great. We went to the 6th St. location which is more of a food truck and the delivered our pizza into the bar next door. This was definitely top 5 GF pizza’s I’ve ever had. There are multiple locations all over the Austin area too. Hopdoddy Burger Bar | 1400 S Congress Ave, Ste A190, Austin, TX Not pictured: truffle fries fried in dedicated frier! WOO! But, don’t eat these burgers. Felt very not okay after eating here but I definitely took a risk eating here. The reviews were very 50/50 if the place was celiac safe or not. Check on the fries if you go but they were in a dedicated fryer when I was there and they were amazing. Frank’s | 4th & Colorado, Austin 78701 Awesome late night snack stop. The waiter was super knowledgeable about the gluten free options. …

The Lona’s Obsession Continues

Decided to pick up Lona’s Lil Eats for take out last weekend with Sam and to try some new things on the menu. We are still obsessed. This time we both ended up getting the grilled steak wrap. They are famous for the wraps claiming they are the “original giant rice paper wraps” and let me tell you, they are not joking because this thing was MASSIVE. I ate it for three separate meals. I also got the chopped vinaigrette salad for my side. Their smoked vinaigrette is amazing! To learn more about Lona’s check out my first blog post about them.

Lona’s Lil Eats | St. Louis, MO

First let me address the elephant in the room (picture): The can of Busch is my boyfriend Sam’s and even though he drank some gluten with our dinner, he really enjoyed his gluten free food. Lona’s Lil Eats’ menu is completely gluten free expect their dumplings and like 1 dish with a flour tortilla. However, they are known for their MASSIVE (seriously they are huge) rice paper wraps. But in typical Hayley fashion, I got something else. I got the Lona-Q Chicken. It consisted of grilled chicken, stir-fried glass noddles, and Lona-Q sauce. The sauce was similar to a sweet and spicy asian BBQ sauce and was amazingly good. All plates come with a side or salad so I opted for the chopped vinaigrette. Sam got the #1 5 Star platter which was basically everything on the menu, typical. We both loved this place and are planning to go again very soon. It had such a cute interior and patio seating outside. Check out their hours and menu here.

Spinach Artichoke Dip

Check out the original recipe posted by Emily at joyfulabode.com. I’m sorry for the low quality finished product picture, I had a houseful of hungry relatives and had to snap a quick picture before it was all gone. I’m sure you have all been there before. Note the half-eaten chip and the hot pad from the 70s. There are only really 3 steps to making this dish besides putting the mix in the oven. It’s a perfect dip to make when you are short on time or need to bring something quick to a party (superbowl, anyone??). All you have to do is soften the cream cheese in the microwave then mix in the rest of the ingredients, place in the oven for 30-45 minutes, then add some more cheese on top and broil until melted. You really can’t get much easier than that!!

KIND of a big deal | KIND bars

KIND bars are my go-to breakfast, snack, on-the-go grab. There are so many kinds (lol) and flavors to choose from I can bet that you’ll find at least one you like. In the picture above there are several different varieties from the breakfast to the plus.  My favorite are the healthy grains. Great size and not too chewy but also not too crunchy. These are just three of the many flavors I love of that variety.  The breakfast bars ar smaller but there are two in each pack. I’ve tried a few of these and the blueberry ones are definitely my favorite and I actually don’t even like blueberries.  I have mixed feelings about the PLUS bars. They have a great amount of protein and chocolate but they are almost too hard for me to enjoy eating. This one tasted mostly like nuts with a hint of chocolate and absolutely no peanut butter.  I’d love to try out some new KIND bar flavors. Leave me a comment with your favorite flavors!!

Because who doesn’t need toaster bags….

I fully admit that I made my Amazon toaster bag purchase on a complete whim when I saw someone posting about them on one of the several gluten free related Facebook pages I am following. Then they sat in my bedroom without being touched for a solid 2 months. I was thinking to myself, “Why do I need these?” “I am a broke graduate student, I don’t travel!” “I have my own dedicated toaster at home.” But the other day I was putting my lunch in the communal refrigerator in Goldfarb, a building part of the WashU Brown School, and I saw the toasters. My heart was instantly filled with excitement and endless bagel opportunities. However, those feelings quickly turned sour when I realized that I couldn’t use the gluten-infested toasters. I came home with a heavy heart until I saw my toaster bags starting lovingly back at me from my bedroom shelf. Sometimes your most sporadic purchases end up being beyond useful. I threw a bagel and toaster bag in my backpack and made myself …

Pizza Crust Mix

Pizza is something I took for granted before I was diagnosed. I didn’t love it when I was younger because of my dislike for tomato sauce and by the time I got to college I only had 2 years to truly appreciate all of its greatness.  That being said I work at a summer camp and handle delicious looking delivery pizza on a weekly basis and I am on the search of my life to buy/defrost/make from scratch the best pizza I can. My most recent pizza attempt was found at my local Fresh Thyme. Only takes a few minutes to make just mix 2 tablespoons of oil, 1 cup shredded cheese (optional), 2 eggs, and 1/4 cup  milk or water. Takes about 15 minutes to bake for a 14 inch pizza crust.  I put all of my ingredients under my cheese because that is how I prefer my pizza. This particular pizza was bacon, green peppers, white onions, fresh garlic, romano and mozzarella cheeses, and some garlic salt and ground pepper. I used Preggo Pizza Sauce. …

Busch Stadium | St. Louis

No matter if you are young and single or have a family, going to the ballpark is always fun but can be a challenge when you are trying to feed (and hydrate) a celiac or person with a gluten intolerance. I have been seeing more and more posts about awesome gluten free options at ballparks all over America so I thought I would do a little research on my ballpark, Busch Stadium, in St. Louis, Missouri. I looked online at their website and found where the stand with gluten free options was located. You can find that list here.  I have not been to a Cardinal’s game since I went gluten free so I was excited for the night. However, I am very glad that I ate before I went to the game because I would have been very hungry. I went on a journey across the stadium from my seats to the Farmer’s Market area where they claimed to have some gluten free options. The gluten free item was a small to medium sized …

Angry Orchard Strawman Farmhouse Hard Cider

I love my hard cider. I know that they are sugary and contain a ton of calories but I don’t care because they make me happy. Last Thanksgiving I had 1750 calories from Hard Cider alone and I don’t regret it one bit. Recently, I have been branching out and trying new ciders whenever I see them. I have my favorites and ones that I don’t like too much either but it is always fun for me to try something new. This week it was Angry Orchard’s Strawman Farmhouse Hard Cider. It comes from their Cider House collection that also includes Iceman and The Muse, which I cannot wait to find and try. I am no alcohol aficionado and I am not going to try to impress you with words I googled to sound like I know what I am talking about when it comes to describing alcohol so I will enlighten you with a little blurb from the Angry Orchard website about this cider: Strawman combines a distinct blend of juices from traditional culinary and …
