Gluten Free Alcohol

Let me just start by saying that there is much debate about if certain types of alcohol are gluten free or not. I don’t have time for that shiz so I stick to what I drink and you do you boo (or course only if you are of legal drinking age). Here is what I am drinking right now: 1. Dry White Wine – usually Trader Joe’s 2 buck chuck Sauvignon Blanc because I’m ballin’ on a Social Worker’s budget.     2. Hard Seltzer – Here are my favorites in order – Truly: Grapefruit & Pomelo (if you get the multi-flavor pack you may have to mix the lemon & yuzu one with tea/sprite/flavored vodka like I do because I think they are nasty on their own; the rest of the flavors are good)   – White Claw: Ruby Grapefruit / lime flavors are my favorite. Black Cherry and Raspberry aren’t my favorite. I think they are too sweet for a seltzer and I drink seltzer to get away from the sweetness of Cider …

Soulard Coffee Garden and Cafe | Soulard, St. Louis, MO

Soulard Coffee Garden is a cozy spot located in the Historic Soulard Neighborhood near Downtown St. Louis. At first glance, you would never expect this hole in the wall restaurant to have great gluten free options but stop in and you’ll be surprised. Menu items are marked with a “G” if they are gluten free and the home fries are baked not fried. And let’s not forget the mimosa pitches and other boozy breakfast delights. My go-to’s are the Hash & Eggs (pictured here) and the Slinger. Always get the home fries, you will regret it if you don’t. Check them out here and hmu next time you’re in the neighborhood and looking for a brunch date 😉

Retreat Gastropub, Midtown, St. Louis, MO

Retreat Gastropub does not advertise their gluten free options but they have gluten free buns and a dedicated fryer for their amazing french fries. My go-to is the farmhouse burger because I cannot resist a fried egg. They, also, have GF crusts for their flatbreads but last time I was there the wait staff told me that they are not celiac safe because they cook them on the same surface as gluten crusts. As always, make sure to ask each time to ensure their fryer policies have not changed! For more information head over to their site

A² | Washington Ave, St. Louis, MO

***Update: unfortunately A squared closed their doors on Monday October 10th check out their webpage for more information*****  I have been trying to make my way to A²  (pronounced A- squared) for a few months now and I finally made it!!! This is one of the only completely gluten free restaurants in St. Louis city. They recently made Feast Magazine’s “15 Best Spots for Gluten-Free Dining in St. Louis.” I am excited to make my way through that list. Sam and I decided to order a few things off the menu and share. This is our go-to when trying out new GF restaurants. Pictured above is the Washington Avenue Sandwich (Smoked Chicken, Cabbage salad, BBQ Mayo, and Mustard Aioli). I am not a mayo fan at all. I avoid it at all costs normally but I was intrigued by the BBQ flavor. I ended up LOVING this sandwich. The baguette was amazing. That being said, the chips were nothing special, lacked salt/flavor, and ours were a bit soggy with grease. Our second order was the …

Ace Pumpkin Hard Cider

Happy fall, y’all!! Even though it is 90+ degree in the city of St. Louis, we have officially transitioned to fall. And you know what that means??? PUMPKIN ERRRTHANG. Break out the PSL, flannel, and hayrides!!! My favorite fall themed beverage is Ace Pumpkin Hard Cider. I cannot wait to find it on tap and in stores soon!! I have absolute no issue with the sweetness of most ciders because I have an intense sweet tooth. However, this cider is definitely more on the spicy side and less sweet than their other varieties for those of you out there who are  not a fan of the sweetness! Check it out and let me know what you think!!!

Austin, TX

Hey y’all, I went to Texas and actually had (mostly) amazing gluten free food so I wanted to share my findings! VIA 313 Pizza | 1111 E 6th St, Austin, TX This place was great. We went to the 6th St. location which is more of a food truck and the delivered our pizza into the bar next door. This was definitely top 5 GF pizza’s I’ve ever had. There are multiple locations all over the Austin area too. Hopdoddy Burger Bar | 1400 S Congress Ave, Ste A190, Austin, TX Not pictured: truffle fries fried in dedicated frier! WOO! But, don’t eat these burgers. Felt very not okay after eating here but I definitely took a risk eating here. The reviews were very 50/50 if the place was celiac safe or not. Check on the fries if you go but they were in a dedicated fryer when I was there and they were amazing. Frank’s | 4th & Colorado, Austin 78701 Awesome late night snack stop. The waiter was super knowledgeable about the gluten free options. …

MYBREAD flatbread pita pizza

These are the real deal. I honestly don’t think I need to look for a different gluten free pizza crust ever again. The MYBREAD Flat Bread Pita made the most amazing and easy crust a celiac could ask for. The best part? It took 10 minutes at 450 degrees. Fast AND easy, that’s my favorite type of meal. I am not going to lie, this pizza was a throw whatever random things I could find on top kind of pizza but I’ll still give you the details. The sauce: Classico creamy alfredo pasta sauce The toppings: fresh garlic, diced onion, and baby spinach The cheese: mozzarella, parmesan, pecorino romano

The Lona’s Obsession Continues

Decided to pick up Lona’s Lil Eats for take out last weekend with Sam and to try some new things on the menu. We are still obsessed. This time we both ended up getting the grilled steak wrap. They are famous for the wraps claiming they are the “original giant rice paper wraps” and let me tell you, they are not joking because this thing was MASSIVE. I ate it for three separate meals. I also got the chopped vinaigrette salad for my side. Their smoked vinaigrette is amazing! To learn more about Lona’s check out my first blog post about them.

Bar Louie | Central West End, St. Louis, MO

Anytime I am going to (attempt) to eat at a new place I always look on the internet for menus and reviews from the gluten free community. I use places like Find Me GF and any other forums where people can post about their experiences. I know not everything you read on the internet is true and I take people’s advice with a grain of salt but it is comforting to see what other people have said. My most recent adventure was trying to eat at Bar Louie. This is a chain restaurant that has a fun and hip bar feel. I, admittedly, really like the drinks that they have and enjoy their happy hour on occasion. However, yesterday was the first time I had tried to eat here. Plain and simple, I did not end up ordering anything and would not recommend anyone else to for a few reasons. It was really difficult to even find anything about their gluten free footprint on the internet. They do not have a menu on their website and there were …

Pizza Crust Mix

Pizza is something I took for granted before I was diagnosed. I didn’t love it when I was younger because of my dislike for tomato sauce and by the time I got to college I only had 2 years to truly appreciate all of its greatness.  That being said I work at a summer camp and handle delicious looking delivery pizza on a weekly basis and I am on the search of my life to buy/defrost/make from scratch the best pizza I can. My most recent pizza attempt was found at my local Fresh Thyme. Only takes a few minutes to make just mix 2 tablespoons of oil, 1 cup shredded cheese (optional), 2 eggs, and 1/4 cup  milk or water. Takes about 15 minutes to bake for a 14 inch pizza crust.  I put all of my ingredients under my cheese because that is how I prefer my pizza. This particular pizza was bacon, green peppers, white onions, fresh garlic, romano and mozzarella cheeses, and some garlic salt and ground pepper. I used Preggo Pizza Sauce. …
